Sew Right opens its doors February 5th!

Pamela Gibbons, Managing Director and Founder of Sew Right, started a growing fabrication business making one of kind products for the custom interior design industry in 2004. Soon the work became so demanding that Pamela saw the need for assistants in her business, as well as extra-long yoga sessions!

However, as Pamela has experienced in the past, the hassle of setting up social security and workman's comp is a serious obstacle to hiring part-time employees. One afternoon, while in the downward facing dog pose, staring into her sticky mat, Pamela was called by her higher power to train students to start their own businesses!. In a moment, the idea for Sew Right was born.

Alison_and_Sandra

Alison, student, worked as a nurse to help support her three boys, with her husband fighting his fourth tour in Kirkuk, Iraq. A back injury has led Alison to leave nursing and pursue re-education in a new career. Alison was introduced to Sew Right through Peanut Butter & Jelly Family Services, a non-profit organization that has taken a hand in making Sew Right a reality. While assisting Alison in the caretaking her child, one of whom has bipolar disorder, PB&J saw Alison's passion for sewing, and suggested that she apply for the inaugural semester of Sew Right.

Although she is already quite accomplished in making breast feeding slings, Alison started at Sew Right with the hopes of expanding her repertoire of sewing skills. She looks forward to making chair cushions, and hopes that new skills will create new opportunities for entrepreneurship in her craft.

Pam_and_Elisa

Elisa , student , loves caring for her three children, as well as working with her hands. A single mother, Elisa works as a waitress at the Route 66 Casino. Already competent at carpentry, she hopes to learn more in the craft of sewing alongside Pamela Gibbons. One of her first completed class projects came together rapidly: a Cars-themed pillow for her youngest son is bright and colorful, like the “Westward Ho!” world view that is still ever-present on Route 66.

Sandra Moreano Executive Educator for Sew Right, arranges the course syllabus and schedule for every new semester. She is also in charge of application guidelines and course deadlines. Sandra started at Sew Right by helping raise funds, and now she is pleased to learn the art of sewing as she helps guide how it is taught. As an educator at CNM, Sandra has set out to mold the Sew Right experience into a more formal educational course.

Rachel

Rachel, student, has had previous experience in fashion design in High School, and has loved and appreciated the subject ever since. Rachel was also introduced to Sew Right through PB&J, where she volunteers as well as with finding help for the care of her daughter. Rachel enjoys the fun experiences and valuable education at Sew Right, which includes learning the technique of cording throw pillows. Rachel's goal is to start her own business with these new sewing skills.

Sew Right Volunteers are eager to teach students new methods and techniques every week, and aim to fully complete a project at each session. For the first day of class, Pamela taught her students how to choose fabrics for throw pillows, cord the seams, and insert zippers. They will move quickly on to boxed chair cushions, slipcovers and window treatments Every session of Sew Right emphasizes commitment to excellence and a professional work ethic in custom fabrication.
