Sew Right Skills 101
Tuition $425

October 6 to November 22, 2011-- Every Thursday, 10 am to 1 pm, Downtown Location

Class sessions 3 hours long

Course Description: Provide 8 three hour sewing lessons on workroom fabrication. Classroom time consists of a mixture of lecture and lab time.

Lab information: includes use of a sewing machine, serger, cutting board, foam cutter, iron, and large sturdy table.

Course Goals
Students will:
--be provided with a non-threatening, positive atmosphere conducive of maximizing the learning environment.
--develop a sense of professionalism from the beginning by using the basic vocabulary of the trade, such as: fabrication, design, marketing, business skills, workmanship, dependability etc.
--will learn the fundamentals of workroom fabrication
--learn to access the many resources available in the business such as: foam and fabric stores, design stores, places to find old furniture etc.
--learn to become problem solvers and develop as a team .
--learn to ask question when clarification is needed.

Course objectives
--Learn to value the quality of their work
--Fabricate a throw pillow with cording.
--Fabricate a boxed cushion
--Fabricate Curtain Panels
--Learn the fundamentals of slipcovers and simple upholstery
--Be prepared for next level sewing class
--Develop professional skills

Grading System: Students will be graded on the following criteria; Attendance 10% , Professional Attitude 10%, Project Completion 80%,

Attendance policy: Attending every class is essential to learning the fundamental basic sewing skills needed for classroom fabrication. Important points will be lost for any class time missed. Missing even one class means you may be dropped from the program. However, we do not want to make that happen! So please contact us by phone or email if you are going to miss class.

For the over forty crowd, we do a lot of close work so please bring a pair of reading glasses if you need them.

Class One: Fabricating a Throw pillow-
Learn about zippers and cording.

Class Two: Fabricate a box cushion.
Work with Foam, Boxing, and snap Tape

Class Three: More foam and boxing practice

Class Four: Curtain Panels
Learn about complex measuring and yardage

Class Five: Curtain Panels cont.
Learn about lining and top treatments

Class Six: Slipcovers -Part 1

Class Seven: Slipcovers - Part 2

Class Eight: Simple Upholstery

 

 

Sew Right Business 201
Prerequisite--Sew Right Skills Scholarship 101

Advanced sewing techniques including problem fabrics, Fancy piecing and trim.

Setting up a work room with necessary supplies
Applying for micro business loan of $2,500

Pricing, Business license, Gross receipt tax, Tax returns
Standardized forms and work orders

Help new 101 students by volunteering to student teach, while reviewing skills.

Visit suppliers and make sales call to customer

Complete project for customer.

Advance into mentor program.

 

Beginning upholstery 301
Tuition $425
Prerequisite--Sew Right Skills 101 or comparable program
Neccessary tools- staple puller and plyers and a occational chair

1st class--Figuring yardage, estimating supply needs and tools to complete the job. Removing old cover, saving pieces for pattern. (Special attention must be paid to order of removal) Camera may be useful.

2nd class--removing old cover cont.

3rd class--neccessary repairs and basic furniture construction.  Pattern planing and cutting.

4th class--Cutting and sewing

5th class--Use of tools and upholstery

6th class--Upholstery

7th class--Upholstery continued

8th class--Upholstery continued

Three Hour Workshops
Tuition $75 for Throw Pillows; $125 for Tuffets
